These statistics were
gathered from across the Internet (October 2006) and paint an
interesting snapshot of the state of the Internet, its traffic levels,
commerce estimates, and user behaviors.
- The number of
people using the Internet has risen 200% since 2000
- An estimated 1.08
billion people use the Internet as of September 18th, 2006
- English is the
most used language on the Internet at 29.7%, followed by “Chinese
13.3%, Japanese 7.9%, Spanish 7.5%, German 5.4%, and French 4.6%”
- The
most widely used web browser is Internet Explorer 6 at 56%, followed
by Foxfire at 27%
- The search engine
of choice is Google with a 43.7% usage rate, followed by Yahoo
(28.8%) and MSN (12.8%)
- Email is second
only to telephones for the most used form of communication
- An estimated 171
billion emails are being sent each day with 2 million going out
every second
- Twenty-nine
percent of emails sent are genuine; the rest are spam
- According to
comScore, Google alone receives 91 million search requests a day
- Sixty-three
percent of U.S. Internet users (approx. 109 million people)
performed a local search online in July 2006
- Google and Yahoo!
receive the most local searches followed by Microsoft and Time
Warner Network
- Forty-one percent
of those conducting a local search were searching for something in
their home area, as opposed to searching for information on
businesses in locales that they intended to visit
- During the second
quarter of 2006, 47 percent of local searchers visited a local
merchant as a result of their search behavior and more than
one-third made contact online
- Approximately
$984.9 billion ($26.3 billion adjusted) in total retail e-commerce
sales were made during the 2nd quarter of 2006
- Millions of items
available through auction and fixed-price trading at eBay every day
- eBay has 203
million confirmed register users, 78 million of which are active
- As of the 2006 2nd
quarter, eBay has posted 596 million new listings and showed a gross
merchandise volume of $13 billion
- On August 8, 2006,
eBay motors sold its 2 millionth passenger vehicle
- PayPal has 114
million registered payments accounts and is accepted by millions of
merchants worldwide, on and off eBay
- $9 billion in
transactions were made through PayPal during the 2nd quarter of 2006
- Windows XP is the
most popular operating system (see Table 5). The windows family
counts for nearly 90%” of the OS used, including XP, 2000, Win09,
WinNT, and 2003. Mac OS platforms hold 3.8% and Linux holds 3.5%
